Excerpts from Honeysuckle Promise:

Learning to Fly

Promises poured into a straw cup
seeping out
the blood running down your leg
Teething on a phallic stone
coddling flesh like a rag-doll
Pulling the rope taught around your neck
this is how we learn to fly.

Spires

Spires from a milkweed pod
lifting a feathery seed:
these mechanisms are ancient.

Tendrils of down
caressing a sky of airplane metal;
lifted upward under a pure stillness.

A nanosecond before inhalation;
your hand twitches subtly
in the dissected light of morning.

Your eyes can be the space
through which the dawn travels
and can give this journey breadth and meaning.
