The Newport Chess Club: A Proposal
Motivation:
Newport lacks a place where enthusiasts can
forget the winter blues in the
winter and avoid the beach burn-out in the hot
summer by playing some good chess.
Purpose:
To provide a place where chess can be played,
studied, and enjoyed in Newport County, (Rhode Island).
Goals:
The goals for the Newport Chess Club
are:
-
Increase the popularity and the level of chess
activity in Newport County
-
Establish a chess school
-
Represent Newport County in chess tournaments
and other chess related activities
-
Kick-start scholastic chess in Newport
-
Establish a yearly tournament in Newport
Target Audience:
Chess is universal. Everyone will be
welcome. After the club is established, specific programs can be
tailored and targeted to groups based on their distinct characteristics.
One particular example is scholastic chess. Traditionally, scholastic
chess is divided into elementary, junior high school, and high school levels.
Club Requirements:
To ensure a successful chess club, a few requirements
stand out as the most important ones. The requirements can be divided
into facilities and equipment.
Facilities:
-
Location
-
Space
-
Tables
-
Lighting - Lighting conditions
should be close to that of a library
-
Storage Space - To safekeep chess equipment
Equipment Required:
The equipment required for the chess club
can be divided into indispensable equipment needed for start-up and desirable
equipment that can be sought at a later point. In the indispensable
category we have the following:
-
Sets - For every set and board, 2 persons
can play
-
Boards
-
Clocks - It is recommended but not absolutely
necessary to start.
-
Demonstration Board - To give chess
lectures
Chess Library:
The chess library would be a collection comprised
of books, magazines, VHS Video titles, and computer software. Initially
donations
will be sought. After the club reaches a stable membership, fees
can be considered to help cover the club's operation. Sponsorship
of the club is another option.
