WELCOME TO MRS. GORDON
ALGEBRA 7-8 and PRE-ALGEBRA

This year we will be learning the basic algebra needed to take geometry.

MATH EMPOWERS YOU!

As a teacher I am here to empower you with math knowledge. I realize that, in general, more time is needed than what we have in class to learn the material.
So, I am here in the mornings at 7:15 and after school until 3:15.
Or call the school at 412-2800 to make an appointment or ask questions.
Or e-mail me at darleen.gordon@jordan.k12.ut.us
Or look at my web page www.prism.net/dgordon
Or the school’s web page
erms-4.erms.jordan.k12.ut.us

Rules are so that everyone can have the same opportunity to learn. So here are the rules.
1. Show respect to others!
Here are some specific things that you can do to show respect to your fellow classmates and teacher.
a. Build each other up with your comments
b. Get permission to leave seat
c. Only water is allowed in class
d. No writing on the desks, whiteboard, overhead, or bulletin boards without permission
e. Get permission to talk
f. No touching others or their belongings
2. Be prepared!
This means to bring a pencil, math book, math notebook, calculator, math homework, planner, and blank paper every day to class.

Consequences are for those who can’t follow the rules.
1. Lose points on participation grade.
2. Extra homework.
3. Isolated in another classroom
4. Lose game, group, or computer privileges.
5. Referrals.
6. Detention with Mrs. Gordon.
7. Parent-teacher conference.

Description of sections
Assignments are given almost every day and are due the next day. This is how points will be given:
• 10 points if assignment is completed and work is shown
• 7 points if assignment is completed, but no work is shown
• 6 points if assignment is completed, work is shown, and it is late
• 4 points if assignment is completed, but no work is shown, and it is late
Mountain Math is a review of things that as a student you should know or things we have learned. We do it at least once a week and I grade it. It is worth 8 - 25 points.

D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) will be counted as a 20 point assignment.

If you are absent or late your assignment is due within one week.

Quizzes are usually unannounced. If you are late to class you cannot take the quiz. This is the largest grade dropper, so DO NOT BE LATE TO CLASS!!!!! There will be at least 15 quizzes a quarter.

If you are absent, you have one week to make up a missed quiz.

Life Skills points are given every day. Points will be lost for unexcused absences (being absent without a parent note), tardies, and not following the class and school rules.

Notebooks will be graded once a quarter. I recommend that you use a three ring binder. You should have 4 sections in your notebook and you will be graded on 5 things. Here are the five grading criteria: 1) how well you take and keep notes for the whole year, 2) having your disclosure, 3) all assignments and mountain math from the current quarter, 4) test and quizzes from the current quarter, 5) organization and neatness.

If your notebook is late, you will lose 20% every day it is late. After 4 days, I will not accept it.

Tests are given approximately every 2 weeks for a total of at least 4 per quarter. I will drop one of your first three tests. Or I will drop one of all four if you have turned in all of your assignments on time.

If you are absent, you have one week to make up the test before school or Thursday afternoons.

EXTRA CREDIT:

• Every day there is a new story problem on the board. You need to copy the problem, show your work and the answer to get 5 points. Fewer points will be given for less work or the wrong answer. Do not work on it in class or ask me how to do it. It is extra credit and should be done outside of class.
• Every day you can do double the amount of homework questions I assign to get 5 points extra credit. (It is an all or none deal.)
• Go to a web page that is listed on my web page in the extra credit section. To get credit, print the test or quiz, show your work, and answers. You will get 5 points for the 5 question quiz and 10 points a review quiz.
• Other things I might assign through out the quarter.

Your grade should be based on your work and knowledge of math, not extra credit. Because of this, your extra credit will not let you raise your grade higher than the next step. Example: You have a C+ and you do extra credit. You can not get higher than a B- with your extra credit. If you want to guarantee a grade change, do at least 50 points extra credit.

Citizenship is based on your life skills grade. See attached chart for a detailed description.

Hall passes are given at the beginning of the quarter. You are only allowed two. If you do not use your hall passes, they are extra credit on your participation grade. You must have your planner to use the hall pass.

Homework coupons are given during in class homework time for working on the assignment. They make up three problems or are 3 points extra credit. You have to do at least 3 problems on your assignment, and then you can use homework coupons for the rest.

Failing notices will be sent out by the school two weeks before the end of the quarter. Do not wait until two weeks before the quarter ends to fix your grade. Use powerschool and look your grade up at home or the library.

By district policy, electronic devices are prohibited during class time. These include cell phones, text capabilities, palm pilots, cameras, recording and playback devices, and game boys. The possession of these items is a privilege and this privilege may be lost for inappropriate use as well as disciplinary action taken if necessary, according and following district policy. Students are to follow established school policy for phone access during the school day.

Bullying and other forms of harassment will not be tolerated and will be dealt with according to Elk Ridge and Jordan District policies.

So let’s have fun this year!

Grade Weighting
60% Participation/ Life skills
40% Written work and tests

Participation/Life Skills: This section is based on your attendance, following the school and classroom rules, and how you participate in class.

Attendance: You will be given 20 points a day, 10 points for dressing and 10 points for participating. If you are absent without a parent note, you lose 20. If you have a parent note, you will get 10 points and need to make up the other 10 points with a written assignment. There are times when an illness or injury may prevent a student from participating in class. A parent note will be accepted for 2 days (for the entire quarter) to excuse dressing points. If a student needs to be out longer than that, a doctor’s note is required. In either case to earn the participation points, a written assignment will be given that is due at the end of class. No one is allowed to sit or not dress without a note. If you are tardy, you lose 4 points. You can be tardy twice in one day. You must be in the locker room by time the bell rings and you must be dressed and on stage 4 minutes after the tardy bell rings.

Rules: The classroom rules are listed above. The school rules you can read in the handbook.

Proper dance dress attire:
You must have a tank, short sleeve, or long sleeve leotard. No spaghetti straps or camisoles leotards or wearing a shirt only. You need to have tights or some other type of skin tight legging that goes at least to your knee. You cannot have earrings that hang past your earlobe or any other loose jewelry that could get caught by someone’s hand and hurt you or anyone else. You may wear a tight fitting shirt over your leotard or shorts over your tights, but be prepared to be asked to take them off on certain occasions (usually when you test). You are not allowed to wear socks or hoodies or have your dance pants over your feet in class. If you are not in dance dress code, you lose 10 points and will be asked to change.

Participation: This is your concentration (how well you pay attention and do not talk) during class. It also encompasses how well you take corrections and doing your best all the time.

Written work and tests: You will have a 2-page report to write each quarter. At the end of each quarter you will have a 2-page self-assessment to write. You will have vocabulary or dance tests at least every two weeks. You are required to write a critique on a live performance. D.E.A.R. will be a 20 point assignment. If you do not have your own book, you lose 7 points. If you do not read, you lose 20 points.

****You will have only one week to make-up an assignment.****

Citizenship is based on your participation/life skills grade. If you have 4-6 tardies or absences( even if the absences are excused) or no dresses, you will get an N. If you have 7 or more tardies or absences( even if the absences are excused) or no dresses, you will get a U. If your behavior is not under control, you will get an N or a U. If you want an H, you need to participate positively in class with only 1 or 2 tardies or absences or no dresses.

Hall passes are given at the beginning of the quarter. You are only allowed two. If you do not use your hall passes, they are extra credit on your participation grade. You must have your planner to use the hall pass and a shirt to put over your leotard.

Extra credit: You can do extra critiques. Your grade should be based on your work and knowledge of dance, not extra credit. Because of this, your extra credit will not let you raise you grade higher than the next step. Example: You have a C+ and you do extra credit. You can not get higher than a B- with your extra credit.
