Report for the second quarter of Dance 1

Report for second quarter for Dance 1A

Your report for second quarter is on another type of dance and how it relates to the culture of the country it comes from. You may not choose a type of dance from the United States with the exception of Native-American dance. This report is due May 3, 2005. It needs to be typed, double spaces, no bigger than 12 point font, and in Times New Roman font. (This paper is typed in 12 point Times New Roman as an example for you to use.) The report is worth 50 points. You need to site at least one source. (This means write a bibliography.)

Here are the things that you will be graded on:
1. Paper is typed, double spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font.

2. The body of the paper is at least 2 full pages long. This does not include your name or anything else that belongs on the title page or the bibliography. In other words, do not put you name on the page that you write your report and do not put your source at the end of your report unless it is on a separate page.

3. You should have at least four pages in your report. The first page is the title page, then at least two pages for the body of you report. The last page is you bibliography.

4. The title page should contain your name, the name of your report the date and your class period.

5. In the body of your report you should have at least 5 paragraphs. The first paragraph is an introduction that briefly tells what your paper is about. It should not contain more than one fact. The next three paragraphs (or more if you should need it) should answer the questions below in number 6. The last paragraph is your conclusion, which is a rewording of the introduction or a short summary of what you have written about.

6. You need to answer the following questions in your report. What is the type of dance you are choosing? Where did it come from? Who started it and when did it start? Why was it started? What were the costumes like when it started? What was the music like? How does it relate to the culture of the country it originated in? How has it changed from when it started to where it is now? This could mean costumes, steps, music, who dances, and why it is danced. You are basically telling me the history of a type of dance that originated somewhere other than the United States with the exception of Native-American dance.

7. The last page of your report is the bibliography. If you use a book you need the following: author, title, copyright date, publisher, and where the book was published. If you use the internet, you need the ENTIRE web address. Do not just write the search engine you use, be very specific on the web address so I can look it up for myself without searching anywhere or I won’t count it.

8. Spelling and grammar must be correct. This means use the spelling and grammar check on your word processor. It is also a good idea to have someone else proofread your paper when you think you are finished with it. Sometimes the other person can catch things you may have missed so you can fix them before you turn your report in and lose points for things that are wrong.

For every day you turn this in late you lose 20%. After 4 days it is too late to turn in. Since you have 5 weeks to work on this, do not come to me the day it is due and tell me your troubles for why it is not done because I won’t be sympathetic. It will still be counted late. The best way to avoid this is to do the report early and turn it in early.

Here are some choices, although there are others that I don’t mention: Hula, Chinese folk, belly dancing, Irish dancing, Flamencan, African folk, Native-American folk, etc.

If you do a search on the web, you can find things. Although you may have to search a little harder than last quarter. Just be sure to write the complete address.

REMEMBER THAT COPYING WORD FOR WORD IS PLAGARISM AND WILL EARN YOU AN F.

PLAGRAISM IS ALSO WHEN YOU COPY WORD FOR WORD MORE THAN 10% OF YOUR SOURCE.

If you use a quote, you need to write where it came form in parentheses after the quote or work the source into you report before or after the quote.

Report for the second quarter of Dance 2

Report for second quarter of Dance 1B

You need to do a report on a composer. It is due May 3, 2005. It needs to be typed, double spaced, no bigger than 12 point font, and in Times New Roman font. (This paper is typed in 12 point font Time New Roman as an example for you.) It will be worth 50 points. You need to site at least one source. (This means write a bibliography.)

Here are the things you will be graded on.

3. You should have at least four pages in your report. The first page is the title page, then at least two pages for the body of your report. The last page is the bibliography.

4. The title page should contain you name, the name of your report, the date, and your class period.

5. In the body of your report you should have at least 5 paragraphs. (Your name should not be naywhere on these pages.) The first paragraph is an introduction that briefly tells what your paper is about. It should not contain more than one fact. The last paragraph is your conclusion, which is a rewording of the introduction or a short summary of what you have written.

6. You need to answer the following questions in your report. Write a short paragraph about his or her personal data, ex. where born, when born, education and family life growing up, life as an adult, when died, where died, etc. (That should not be more than 1 page of your report.) Why did he or she start composing, what type of music does he or she compose, what is he or she famous for? How has his or her music changed? Does his or her music reflect his or her life? What did you learn about this person that you can relate to, or how does what he or she compose relate to dance? Can this person be someone you can look up to and why?

7. The last page of your report is the bibliography. If you use a book you need the following: author, title. copyright date, publisher, and where it was published. If you use the internet, you need the ENTIRE address. Do not just write the search engine you use, be very specific on the web address or I won’t count. I need to be able to type your address in and then see the exact place you found your information without having to do a search.

8. Spelling and grammar must be correct. This means use the spelling and grammar check on your word processor. It is also a good idea to have someone else proofread your paper when you think it is finished with it. Sometimes the other person can catch things you may have missed so you can fix them before you turn the report in and get a better grade.

For every day you turn this in late you will lose 20%. After 4 days it is too late to turn in. Since you have 5 weeks to work on this, do not come to me the day it is due and tell me your troubles for why your report is not done because I won’t be very sympathetic. PLAGARISM IS ALSO WHEN YOU COPY WORD FOR WORD MORE THAN 10% OF YOU SOURCE.

IF YOU QUOTE FROM A SOURCE, YOU NEED TO WRITE WHERE YOU GOT IT IN PARENTHESES OR WORD IT IN YOU REPORT BEFORE OR AFTER THE QUOTE.

Live performance critique

How to write a critique

A critique is supposed to be an objective view of what was good and bad in a performance. Everything has to work together to make it worth recommending. Here are the different things that you need to look at and think about while you are watching the performance. Then answer some of these questions when writing your critique, which should be in essay form (paragraph form).

1. Title—Does the title of the dance fit the mood, music, style of dance, and/or
story line? (Sometimes there isn’t a story line.)
2. Music—Does the music fit the mood, music, style of dance, and/or
story line?
3. Costumes—Do the costumes detract from the movement? Do they enhance the movement? Do they fit the mood, music, style of dance, and/or
story line?
4. Lighting—Does the lighting enhance the dance or detract from it? Does it fit the mood, music, style of dance, and/or story line.
5. Props—If there are props, were they used creatively? Were they part of the dance or story line? Would the dance have been better with or without them? Do the props fit the mood, music, style of dance, and/or story line?
6. Movement/Choreography—Was the movement well rehearsed? Did it fit with mood, music, costumes, style of dance, and/or story line? Did the dancers look good? Were the entrances and exits appropriately? Were the spatial patterns pleasing? Was there variety in the rhythm?
7. Some personal comments—Were there any parts the took your breath away? Why did they take your breath away? Did you see things in the dancing that we have done in class? Did you see things that I may have given corrections on that they were doing wrong? Did you like the dance? Why? Use the things from #1-6 to support your reasons for why you liked it or didn’t like it. Do not just say you liked it or didn’t like it without giving a reason.

This paper must be 2 pages. It can be handwritten in pen or typed. If you hand write it, it must be 3 pages and only written on one side of the paper. If you type it, it can be 2 pages,12 font, Times New Roman. You will be graded on how well you answer the above questions, how insightful your comments are, grammar, and spelling. If you hand write it, it must be neat and legible.

If you want full credit, you must have a ticket stub or program stapled to your critique.

If you are going to be unable to attend a live performance, I must know two weeks before the assignment is due. You must also have a parent note saying you why you are unable to attend. I will then give you an alternate assignment. If you do not tell me two weeks before the assignment is due with a parent note, you will receive a zero on this assignment.

 Self critique

go to http://www.uen.org/core/dance/index.html and choose dance 1A for dance 1 or dance 1B for dance 2. This gives you the core and the guidelines to help you write your paper. Write about what it is you have learned and improved on and still need to improve. Be specific!

It needs to be 1-2 pages. It can be handwritten or typed. Only use one side of the paper. If you write it, use pen. You will be graded on spelling and grammar, so make sure you proofread your paper! (Don't write it the class period before it is due.) It is worth 50 points.
